Who is Tiga Tactics?


Dr. Conrad Bui

Co-Founder | Chief Training Officer | Chief Bone-Cruncher


Dr. Conrad Bui is frequently featured in various international magazines, social media channels, and podcasts, because of his diverse training and experience.

He is a fifth-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and American Freestyle Karate.

Seeking to understand the use of common weapons, he started learning Kali in 1990 and eventually earned the rank of guro (instructor) in this deadly Filipino combat art, which specializes in stick and knife fighting.

As if that weren't enough, Dr. Bui later achieved certification as a senior instructor in both Silat Serak and Kuntao Silat de Thouars under legendary teachers from Southeast Asia who specialize in both empty-hand and weapon-based techniques in close quarters.

Along with his advanced rankings in bladed combat arts, he is also an instructor in Bruce Lee's scientific street-fighting system of Jeet Kune Do.

While he still practices all of those systems, Conrad is also a Muay Thai (kickboxing) coach at World Team USA and is a competitive black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

To round out his skillset, he has also spent time ducking haymakers and beer bottles when he pulled security duty as a bouncer at a biker bar. 


Patrick Vuong

Patrick started studying martial arts in 1995 and has taught women's self-defense since 2008.

He's an instructor in the bladed art of Pekiti-Tersia Kali, which uses a wide range of blunt, bladed, and bareknuckled weapons.

Patrick also holds black belts in Kenpo Karate and Southern Shaolin Kung, and is a certified handgun instructor. 

If that weren’t enough, he also served as the senior editor of Recoil Magazine, where he had the honor of studying under some of the country’s elite warriors, including current and former members of the U.S. Army Special Forces and the U.S. Navy SEALs.

And as a subject-matter authority, Patrick is often asked by international publications like Concealment Magazine, Black Belt Magazine, and Knives Illustrated to write about real-world self-defense.

Like our self-defense training, the path to becoming a Tiga Tactics Combatives™ instructor is simple … but not necessarily easy. 

You'll need to set goals, put in regular practice, and exhibit a certain level of fitness. But physical attributes aren’t the only requirements. 

Every certified instructor must also demonstrate a strong moral code, a high level of integrity, and an open-minded attitude. 

On top of that, you must be able to teach efficiently to a wide range of students and have the leadership skills to supervise your own training group.


Here’s the path to becoming a certified Tiga Tactics Combatives™ instructor:

Step 1:
Enroll in this Instructor Certification Program.

Step 2:
Study and memorize the three Level 1 Flagship Courses that are included in this certification program:

  • Knife Defense 1.0
  • Punch Defense 1.0
  • Impact Weapon Defense 1.0


Then, be able to not only demonstrate all of the key techniques from each course but also have the verbal and interpersonal skills to teach them to other students.

Step 3:
Schedule an Instructor Certification Exam and pass the test with a score of 80% or higher.

The Where

Exams can take place at any of our in-person seminars held throughout the year. Enrollment to one of our seminars will automatically waive the exam fee.

If you are unable to attend a seminar in person, an online exam via Zoom can be arranged after the exam fee of $100 has been paid.

What Are The Instructor Rankings?

If you successfully pass the Instructor Certification Exam with a score of 80% or higher, you will receive an assistant instructor certificate that same day and join a growing cadre of passionate teachers who want to make their communities safer, one student at a time.
